The 2006 model Subaru Legacy gained a mild face lift, with re-designed headlights, taillights, front grille and bumpers. The mechanical specifications of the Legacy remained largely the same. The Legacy B4 models in Japan were known as the Legacy GT or Liberty GT in other markets.

The most significant change was the larger 2.5L Flat 4 engine, an increase from the 2.0L version offered previously (The Legacy GT sold in the US was always fitted with the 2.5L EJ25). The engine was fitted with a single twin scroll turbo, and gained some extra torque over the 2.0L due to the larger capacity.
